St Jean d'Angely and the Charente Maritime
|
The Charente Maritime region is one of four departments of the Poitou Charente region
of western France. It is famous for its Cognac and Pineau production with the town of
Cognac and all its distilleries (Hennesey, Martell and Otard to name just a few) just a 30
min drive from any of our gites, cottages and villas. There are many tiny villages and
hamlets to explore. Quaint chateaux are common. Local delicacies include mussels in
cream, goats cheese, honey and cake with angelica.
Swimming, fishing, horse riding, golf, tennis and rowing are all available during the
summer months in the local area. There are also many lovely country walks all year
round. The landscape is gently rolling and ideal for cycling.
The popular seaside resorts around La Rochelle such as the beaches of Fouras and
Chatelaillon and La grand plage on the Ils de oleron are only about an hours drive away
and the historic towns of St Jean d'Angely and Saintes (roman ruins) are even closer.
Futuroscope at Poitiers, the wine chateaux of Bordeaux, Angouleme, Niort and Rochefort
are also all within travelling distance. There is the renowned animal conservation park at
La Palmyre near Royan and a superb aquarium at La Rochelle to name just a few of the
things there are to visit. So plenty to do for young and old alike.
When staying in any of our gites, cottages or villas you will be centrally located in the
beautiful Charente Maritime region making all the historic towns within easy reach, both
those on the coast and those inland.
